Let's Talk about .. AOS Smartphone SMS Solution Services

I joined the AOS Smartphone SMS Solution Services event on September 27, 2011. This event is introduced to me by my professor, Prof. Junichi Iijima. It is the event hosted AOS Technologies.

Vic Shroff, a director of Sales Department of 3Cinteractive gave a speech talking about his company.




Demonstration.


In this event, the audiences joined the demonstration of this services. First, we typed the code and sent it via SMS to the received mobile phones number. It is free, no matter which carrier you are using. Then, we followed the step they showed. We can type the keyword to get the information to know. It can be adapted into business by showing the special promotion or catalog in the SMS form. The customer can reply according to the menu option the previous SMS said.




I think this business model is great. Sometimes SMS channel is forgotten by many people because e-mail is popular nowadays, but the good points of SMS service are still strong until now such as sending speed (less than 1 minute), no need for mail application, free in some countries' promotion, etc.

Let's Talk about .. Daigo Fukuryu-Maru

On June 10th, 2011, I have a school trip in the course of Comparative Studies on the historical development of sciences under the supervision of Prof. Masanori Kaji and Dr. Yakup Bektas.

Our class went to Shin-kiba Station (新木場駅) to visit Daigo Fukuryu-maru Exhibition Hall.

It is an exhibition hall of Daigo Fukuryu-maru (第五福竜丸) or "Lucky Dragon V".

Daigo Fukuryu-

maru is a ship with 35 km height and 250 km width.

It was 160km far from center of atomic testin

g.On March 1st, 1954, at 6.45 a.m., ship crews saw it like the second Sun from the west side.

They already knew about this test, so they though it was safe.
However, there was no official announcement about the schedule.
7-8 minutes later after they heard the sound, they pulled out the instruments and tried to go away. After 2 hours there was rain, actually it was not they rain but ashes.

It took 4-5 hours to get out from there due to the large size of the instrument. They did not know about t

he situation at all.Their bodies received the radioactive. Even though they washed their bodies by sea water, in the evening, they got ill.
After they came back, they got more symptoms.

The crews got the same level as the Hiroshima-2-km-surrounding-area-of-atomic-bomb victims.
It was helpful that the washed themselves immediately, but the ship was also radioactived and they had to inside the ship for 2 weeks.

When they arrived, they got experiment in the hospital.
There were 28 crews.

The real ashes is shown in the hall.

The tunas were sold out in the market. The next one of the newspaper reported on the incident. It was first report in Japan about it. Then people in other parts of Japan threw out the tuna even in Tsukiji market in Tokyo.

The government checked the tuna at that moment.
The price of tuna and fish went down.
After 2 months people detected radioactive in the rain.
It was not only march 1st testing but also other experiment. The fifth effected japan because of the wind.

There were 856 ship fishing the tuna, 485.75 tons, got radioactive tuna.
Blood production function and Leukemia.

US paid 2 million US Dollar and Japan stopped making any further processes.
The 70% of paid was sent to fishing industry. But, in fact, they suffered three times more than that amount.

20,000 nuclear weapons are still around the world.

Marshall island and people who conducted the experiments also effected.
And because of that, the level of radioactive increased.

Let's Talk about .. Current Currency Situation

Today, Saturday February 19, 2011, I participated the seminar of "Current Currency Situation" organized by the Royal Thai Embassy's Office of Educational Affairs, Tokyo, Japan.

The speaker was Mr.Kittipong Apibalsri, Minister-Counsellor (Economic and Financial), the Royal Thai Embassy, Tokyo.

The following is my summarize from the seminar.

What is money?

It is the medium to exchange the thing. The ratio is around 70% In Thailand, BOT backs up at 100%. The is only one country that can produce money without any backup is USA ( in god we trust)  How can we calculate the value of cross currency? 1.1. Country's status, government's budget (balance:income=outcome) 1.2. Country's status in term of consumer and seller (demand & demand) (We can predict both of the previous factors.) 2. Value of money not in the status of the medium. Someone makes benefit from money exchanging. Benefit comes from margin.

There are 2 case studies about this issue, 1992 England, and 1997 Asian countries.

England joined the EU commitment to fix with Deutsche Mark ( On that day, the economy reduced, investors sold short (borrow currency, and return with interest when currency is cheaper) At that time, government tried to increase the interest rate, until England announced to defense their currency. Black Wednesday (the day the Bank of England was broken), two times of increasing their currency value. And England escaped from Euro. George Soros, the man who broke the bank of England, said it's not good to defense since the investor pays the currency by loan from, we cannot do leverage since it's not the exact money amount.

 In Asia, the bubble property made people want to invest in Asian. It's from the fixed rate policy. All of this type of investment is easy to escape from the race, so it's not good to do like that. it's the investment that connotation produce the income.

And 10 years later, There was a repeating situation, 2007, it's a domino, Subprime Crisis. USA was criticized a lot about it. At that time, the value of US house was too flexible. American people likes to make Mortgage Loan on the real-estate properties. They sold the loan stock from other bank, and also sold the loan stock of the group of loan stocks. It means the amount of properties increases without any real property.

 This is the subprime crisis since everyone realized that there is nothing, so everyone tried to sell as fast as possible. Then US made a subprime market, Credit Insurance Guarantee. Loan stock is B grade, but if they let the credit commercial bank guarantee your loan stock, so the credit will depends on the credit level of the commercial bank. So someone think about making the group of the guaranteed property and be a new property, so there was a case of branesterm.   Case of Lehman Brothers, at the time Lehman Brothers was filling for bankruptcy, each bank had to  announce how much the portion of Lehman they had. It did not effect much to Thailand.  Next crisis, Greece debt crisis. The government hired the company to modify the country's account. Greece entered Greece at 110 million EURO. EU is going to be the guarantee of country-level customer.

 For the current situation, all countries have not much different situation of economy. Even China, people is still concern in case that it's possible that government will establish a new monetary policy.  QE2 (Quantitative Easing) policy of US Federal made dollar became weak. Investors moved from USA to Asia.

NOTE: Because the size of US market is very large, so for example, if they moved 100% to Asia, it means a lot to invest only 2%.

Each country has different method to prevent the flow of that investment.

- Singapore controls the rate of interest. - Philippines controls the derivative of banks. - Brazil controls by collect the VAT of incoming currency, consider the money as product. First country to use this economy's theory.

Situation of Japanese Yen

Japan have 240 appreciation of Yen. Budget of government, 52% from loan, 48% from tax. And a lot is to ODA loan for developing countries, and pension payment. Last year Japan intervened the currency to warn the investor who wants to earn the margin of currency trading.

Nowadays, Japan has a lot of public debt. so in the future when USA can recover, it's possible that Japan's Yen rate will going back to around 100 Yen/1 USD.  The problem for the investor is even though you trade until you get the benefit, but when you return back to the original currency, the exchange rate may be decreases.  For Asia now the problem may occur if we cannot manage it,the investor will escape out of Asia and at that time the currency will be swing.

Government said that we can make a currency stable by increasing the saving inside the country. Like in Japan 95% is domestic debt. Japanese saves money at bank, and the banks buy gov bond.. That's why Yen is not swinging. It's the pro from the saving habit of Japanese people.

The currency problem can be protected. But the problem occurred because of the way government control the money.  For Japan, IMF recommended that Japan should increase Consumption tax to be 20%, but it's impossible since the politician cannot show the advertisement to increase consumption tax. It seems high but comparing to the developed countries, Japan Tax system is si liar to the developing countries.

Prof. Eisuke Sakakibara, Waseda university, named Mr.Yen, said that the situation of Japan's economy is not good, but better than other countries.

There is a research said that everyone use 5,000 things.  Future Internet challenges consist of more storage, more addresses, more transport capacity , making tech ology compatible, Internet for all, better search tool, from data to knowledge.

Only a few people imagined in last ten years ago that today we have smart phone that can send e-mail like today. There are many Internet involved things around us such as Smart house, business productive, safe health monitoring, logistics. IoT-A will be laying the foundation for such a future.

For Current status, it's Fragmented architecture, no coherent unifying concepts, solution exist for only application silos. No coherent approaches to implement the IoT.  Many island solutions do exist (RFID, sensor, etc.)

- Removing the barriers of deployment and widescale acceptance of IoT
- Demonstrating the usability of IoT-A

- Providing a protocol suite based on open protocols centred around a narrow waste

On December 9th, 2010, I went to the AIST Gerontechnology Forum 2010 / International Society for Gerontechnology Japan Chapter, organized by Affective Laboratory of TokyoTech at AIST Tokyo Waterfront conference room (11th floor), Odaiba, Tokyo, Japan. I joined the workshop of Designing for Older Adults: Human Factor Approaches by Prof.Dr. Wendy A. Rogers and Prof.Dr. Arthur D. Fisk from Human Factors & Aging Laboratory, School of Psychology, Georgia Institute of Technology, USA.

Aging Demographic
From the research, 65-year-old Japanese men is expected to live more 23 years in the future and longer for women. Around 68.8 % of Japanese is going to continue working when they are older.

In US, 65+ are living alone for 15% men and 30% women. Over 50% of them is hypertension, and other deceases. It means they need to use the medical activities. There is an increase rate of computer use for 65+ from 20 to 40% 2010 comparing with 2000. The frequent process 65+ people do is open a file, save a file, and use a printer. About Internet usage, it's quite similar with the computer usage (10 to 40%). For Japan, it is also increases.

Design guidelines

The general way of guideline is to view an older as adult's system as "a noisy information channel". We need to boost the signal strength, like increase the size of visual objects (font size, icon size). And decrease the noise, like isolate messages from other message channels, and maintaining the consistent positioning of target items.

- Black on white 28 point is better than gray and smaller font

Design input device
- Match it with the task demands
- Direct: for pure pointing and clicking tasks
- Indirect: experienced users, combined input tasks,large movements, precision
- Speech recognition: restrictions in manual dexterity; low ambient noise level
- Keyboard input

- Use large keys with clear markings and inter-key spacing

- Provide tactile and auditory feedback with keypads

- Minimize clutter
- Visual: too many display items in any one location

- Auditory: too many sounds to make sense out of such as warning tones

- Cognitive: too many things to keep in memory

- Movement related: too many or too small response items

- Ensure that characters and targets are conspicuous and accessible

- Font size less than 12 should be avoided

- Icons should be large enough to select easily

- Auditory information should be presented at the proper pitch, frequency, and rate

- Screen scrolling should be minimized ( especially horizontal scrolling)
- Provide the site map
- Provide search history
- Indicate clearly where the user currently is
- Provide the navigation assistance for linking

- Frequent and important actions should be easily visible and accessible

- Optimize information organization within natural or consistent groupings

- Develop the menu structure to match medium

- Ensure that perceptions are accurate reflections of the complexity and ease of use of the technology
- Do not assume users will understand why technology might be useful to them, make benefits explicit

I like the sentence that they mention during the discussion period, "We should not think about what technology can do, but we should think about what the technology should do."

There is one nice application I would like to review about it today. It's SnapIt, a WindowsOS application to capture the screen. This light size software is nice for the person who have to make an instruction that needs to show the step-by-step screenshot or describe interface or even buttons; add figure into your e-mail or others. And yes, for Blogger, it's a useful tool.

Let's look at its features. SnapIt supports hotkeys, auto-saving, and clipboard. Various format for the saved file, BMP, GIF, JPEG, TIFF, and more. When using it, you will have a small icon in system tray bar area, which is used to modify the properties. Moreover, we can track the history of our capturing.

Let's Talk about .. JAXA Tsukuba Space Center

Last week I had a chance to visit Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) Tsukuba Space Center. It is located at 2-1-1 Sengen, Tsukuba-shi, Ibaraki-ken, Japan. It's established since 1972 [4].
There are both English and Japanese tour service for free, but you have to book in advance.

First of all, we need to have the visitor card, after that I entered the building to see the introduction video.

First place, I went to the Exhibition Hall. After entering, there is a big Earth half sphere called Dream Port. I can see the position of the satellites above the atmosphere and other JAXA activities.

Spacesuit is used by astronauts for extravehicular activities. It consists of 14 layers of materials to protect. Astronauts from harmful radiation and space debris [4].

They provide the full scale mockup of KIBO, the Japanese Experimental Module (JEM). It is a Japan's first human facility in the International Space Station. Kibo is a module to study about space medicine, biology, Earth observations, material production, biotechnology and communications research [3]. I can see the introduction of utilization of the space environment. They said that Kibo is as big as motor coach [4].

Next to Kibo, there are many rockets standing there. There are 1/12 scale models of the successive rockets.

KAGUYA, an engineering model for a space science and lunar and planetary science research is also shown in the hall. The major objectives of KAGUYA mission are to obtain scientific data of the lunar origin and evolution and to develop the technology for the future lunar exploration. KAGUYA consists of a main orbiting satellite at about 100 km altitude and 2 small satellites (Relay Satellite and VRAD Satellite) in polar orbit [4].

Not only the model, but they also display the real rocket engines "LE-7" and "LE-8", which were used for combustion tests [4].

Then, the bus took me to the Weightless Environment Test Building. There is a large 16-meter-diameter pool with 10.5 meters in depth for the astronaut training with spacesuits. They showed a video of the weightless environment test.

I found that there were some Japanese children learning something about communication technique if the room next to video display place.

On 26 July, 2010, I have a chance to join Senoo Lab's fieldwork. We went to Santory Beer Factory in Tokyo (サントリー武蔵野ビール工場). It's located at 3-1 Fuchu, Tokyo.

The nearest train station to the factory is Bubaigawara Station (分倍河原駅). There is a shuttle bus provided to go from the station to the factory. For

Taxi, it's around 710 Yen.
It is considered the old company of food and beverage in Japan.

After gathering, the staff showed us the video about the process of beer production and then we walked around the factory following her.

1. Ingredient

Suntory uses the following main ingredients:
-First natural water from underground.

-Second malt. It's a cereal grain.

 Suntory has a gold large field of malt because it's the main ingredient of Beer. They let us test t

he taste of malt. It's delicious.


-Third hop. A type of flowers.

 Its smell is like aroma. The staff let us try to smell both scene of them to compare, but for me, I think it's quite similar.
They become premium beer of suntory, with many medals show their nice of taste.

At the entrance there is air blower to blow small dust.

2. Wort production

The temperature is quite hot, around 35.6 c degree.
Unfortunely, we saw only the machine during it's not processing.

3. Fermentation

This process transforms wort into young beer.

It breakdown sugar in wort into alcohol and co2, and young beer is produced.

4. Maturation

They keep young beer at regular temperature 0 c degree.
We walk pass model show inside of the beer tank.

5. Distrillation

6. Canning

They have the red line limit to show the criteria of the length of border of the beer can. They evaluates by computer one by one. They also concern about environment issue , for example, separating of each type of garbage.

Finally I tried the premium malt's beer.

Other than beer, sanitary also provides natchan, an orange juice, and appetizer to eat with beer such as nuts, or rice crackers.

Last Thursday (June 24, 2010) I had a chance to join Hello World! Hello Life! Mobile Apple Contest seminar at Tokyo Institute of Technology. Thanks Ariga san, Kishimo san, and Ikai san for the information.
The speaker of this seminar was Prof.Dr.Masayuki Akamatsu, a professor of sound/media art at the International Academy of Media Arts and Sciences, Institute of Advanced Media Arts and Sciences, Gifu, Japan. He is an iPhone app developer who is interested in media art.

Incubator
He started his presentation with his profile about the Incubator (1999), projecting audio-visual events with 50 MAC computers. They were connected as network and made display and sound. It's a performance that combines human dance with the computer graphics with the rhythm of music and graphic.

Second, the Snowflakes 2008-2009, in Hong Kong, using 20-40 iPhone with wifi. All of them were opened snowflake application. It's kind like a small music performance that seems amazing.

Next, he talked about the largest impact of IT nowadays. There are many impacts. Workshop
After that, it's a workshop time. He asked everyone to try 4 applications on iPhone/iPod touch/iPad: iRelax, FingerLite, Soundrop, and Beatwave. First, we tried to open iRelax, an iPhone/iPad application. We were asked to open one sound we like, then he asked us to move and walk around the hall, we felt different when staying in each place..

Real VS Recognition
He also talked about 'Real'. Sometimes, it's hard to identify which is real which is recognition. For example, between 2 Sony Pictures' movies, 2012 and District9, do you think which one is real? (both of them are computer generated images).

After that, he showed the video clip of Miku HATSUNE (初音ミク), a virtual idol singer. She is the Vocaloid 2 Character Vocal Series that released in 2007. She performed a live concert during Animelo Summer Live 2009 in Japan, and at the Anime Festival Asia (AFA09) in Singapore in the year 2009.

Yesterday, my lab had a field trip to Docomo Solution Room.

NTT Docomo(株式会社エヌ・ティ・ティ・ドコモ) is located at Sanno Park Tower(山王パークタワー).

I took Ginza line to Tameike-Sanno Station (溜池山王駅) G06. Then, I met Prof.Iijima at the platform. So, we walked together to Sanno Park Tower.

Today 10 of us went there to visit the Docomo Solution Room. It's the room that shows the new technology of Docomo.

First, we had to go to 27F to meet Mr.Hiroyasu Yuhashi from Mobile Society Research Institute.

We got the Guest Card to go up to the Solution Room.

I'm really glad that they also prepared the staff who can describe in English for me. They showed us 5 new Products.

1.Adbo Digital Signage System [more info]

It's the big LCD screen for advertisement purpose. It uses Image processing technology check the gender and age of the person who look at the ads to recommend the suitable ads by checking bone eye hair It can collect the data of the time period of the person (But cannot collect the frequency). While it pays attention to only the person who looks at the camera of the ads, it doesn't collect the data of the people who walk pass it.

It collects only the data of age, gender, and the period, but not the photo, so there's no issue about the privacy.

We can get more information when using mobile handset touch at the ads' mobile reader. For example, sales promotion, coupons, etc.

It's not only Docomo mobile phone, but others, such as AU or SoftBank, are also OK. Anyway, it depends on condition of the ads company.

Another good point of using this terminal is the telephone account issue. It means customers can compose email and send to the sign ads realtime. Thus, there is an interaction between customs and shops.

It can encourage customer buying motivation bcoz they stand in front of the sign ads.

The quality of the system to recognize the person is still not good enough to identify each person, but it can be continued further to make something like that.

2.Keitai home system

This system can control everything in home by using the mobile handset as the remote control.

For instance, switching on/off air conditioner, light, and so on.

When we connect to electronic key door, which is connected to the internet, we can lock the door.

(But we cannot unlock it.)

You can see who coming back to home by mobile handset.

There's a sensor, after founding people, it send SMS to mobile handset. So the family doesn't have to worry that something happen at home or not.

When you're at home and someone come to your house, you can also use an intercom by mobile handset.

On the other hand, when you're outside, you also can check it.

The user interface is very easy to understand. They made it like big cartoon icon.

Inside the System Architecture, Home server is connected to all electric devices by adapter and via WiFi.

For the purpose like the women come back home at night, they can turn on light before entering home.

There are 32 devices can be connected to the system.

Every electric devices which have LAN HA Port can connect to this system.

However, Docomo provides the system to only House maker/developer. They do not sell directly to customers.

Therefore, customers can get the system via buying or renovating the house or apartment with the company that buy this system from Docomo.

Because it needs the setting of all system connection.

Nowaday, Docomo have already introduced to the big house-maker companies.

8 is the maximum number of mobile handset that is able to connect to the server.

As of the IP camera, when you're outside, u can check your house by the mobile handset.

By touching mobile handset, an electronic door can be opened, because the system is embedded inside the door.

There are the pattern modes that we can set in the Main mobile handset. For example, Ohaiyou (Morning) mode, or Oyasumi (Night) mode, and also other 2 custom modes.

Other mobile phone operator's handset also can use this system by accessing the website and do it in text mode.

3.Docomo Platform Service Wellness Support

By setting the variety health devices to send the data to Docomo server, then using mobile handset to receive that data from the server.

For example, checking blood pressure, the result will automatically go to the server and then, the mobile handset.

It's better and easier, because there is no need to write or memo everyday to show to the doctor.

This system is introduced to some companies already

Nowadays Japanese care about health a lot, so this system applies to the health-device companies.

4.CyberCoaster

To show the better understanding of the user manual

For example, how to add paper in a copy machine.

It can process by taking video with this device and set the direction to that motion, then we can move that motion as a real movement.

Current example is the manual of how to do aerobic exercise in school.

5.Mobile pen service [more info]

By using a special (coded) Fine dot printed paper when write on the paper, the pen can read the code on each dot of the paper.

Pen reads on the starting point and the ending point of the line we wrote.

In fact, this technology was from Europe. Anoto company sold it to Docomo, then docomo sold to Japanese companies.

All the data is saved in the pen until we check at the "send phone" checkbox, then the data will be sent to computer.

The pen can save 2 kB data.

All the paper have their own ID, so we cannot use the same paper to write something again.

Anyway, if we write on 2 papers, the server will collect on only the paper that they can record the data according to the paper ID.

Thank you very much, Prof.Iijima for my first time of field trip. It's very interesting. Docomo is not only Mobile Phone Operator company, but it is also R&D institute.

Today there's a lecture about "Google Japanese Language input(Google 日本語入力)". Actually, I don't (quite) understand what the speaker described because the whole lecture was in Japanese. So I just followed his slides and searched the internet myself.

He talked about the Google Japanese Language input. He described the algorithms inside this input.

There's a program for inserting Japanese language transformation like IME that everyone is using.

Google is developing the Google Japanese Input by using automatically generate from texts on the web, which Google itself has ability to collect the data, as the method to make typing Japanese easy, especially Japanese name.

It's available for both PC(32-bit) and MAC.

They use TRIE algorithm and prefix algorithm to calculate the suggested result.

Moreover, user can send more vocabulary to Google Social dictionary to help them improve the Japanese dictionary.

I was a commentator of Maeda's presentation in my lab's seminar. He chose the Information & Management Journal's paper "Market Reaction to Application Service Provider(ASP) Adoption: An Empirical Investigation" by Bong-Keun Jeong and Antonis C. Stylianou from University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

I like this paper. It talks about the market reaction from the announcement of ASP adoption in the company samples. The way he planed his research paper was described very well. He explained the methodology in detail.

This paper makes me know that there is a quite positive effect of ASP adoption announcement.

This week was my first time presentation in my lab. I selected the International Journal of Information Management paper "Mapping the reasons for resistance to Internet banking: A mean-end approach" by Tuire Kuisma, Tommi Laukkanen, from University of Kuopio, and Mika Hiltunen from Nordea Bank Finland.

They did research in Finland. Because eventhough Finland can be considered as one of the leading coutries in e-Banking, but some people still use ATM as the main method for payment. This issue also surprised me.

They used the method called mean-end method together with the laddering technique interview to get and analyze the data. Some of the reasons of resistance are out of my thought also. For example, lacking of barcode reader issue.

For the main idea, the resistance to the Internet banking can be consisted of Newness, Lacking of Computer/Internet/Info/Official Receipt/Barcode reader, changeable password, unclear proceeding monitor, etc.

I hope that one day Thailand will be able to adopt Internet banking as the main method for payment system, too.

1. Real economist is the economist who write the important economist papers or theories that many economists know that it's very good. However, it's quite difficult to understand even the economists also take time to read and understand.

Yesterday, I found a Runtime Error page instead of web site showing. A support engineer from Microsoft suggested me to modify web.config of my MOSS in C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\wss\VirtualDirectories\[YOUR_PORT] as following

-in SafeMode tag, set Attribute CallStack="True"
-in customErrors, set Attribute Mode="Off"

I found that my web.config already be set like that. Then, he checked again and found that there are 2 locations of web.config since I have 2 Server: MOSS and DB which I also set both of them as Web Front End server (by installing MOSS to both of them). Thus, two web.config(s) had to be modified. Then, I could see what the error was.

Yesterday, I joined the wrap up day of my division meeting with Mr.Chatree, counsult from Microsoft. He talked about Content Type of MOSS2007 that make me understand clearer about it.

The content type is like a group of metadata that are separated via the type of documents. The content type can be used with any (Document Library of) site if it is located at the top level site.

After I managed integration settings and granted database access, I clicked at Set server defaults in Reporting Services of Application Management. Then, I got an error page "An unexpected error occured while connection to the report server. Verify that the report server is available and configured for SharePoint integrated mode. -> Server was unable to process request. ---> The request failed with HTTP status 401 : Unauthorized" as shown in the figure.
We discussed and connected live meeting with a support engineer from Microsoft. He said that the cause was the authentication mode of ReportServer host website. The way he used to solve this problem was running the command

Last Thursday, I participated the meeting of MS SQL Server 2008 Presentation by Mr.Nicolas and Mr.Jason , engineers from Microsoft.

Because my office member have started using Reporting Services in our systems, thus we would like to discuss about it and the problems we found.

The first one they suggested is "Scale Out". They recommended us to use many report servers to point to the report catalog.

The important one they suggested us to use was Report Catalog. The Report Catalog consists of Reporting Services Database (RSDB) and Reporting Services Tempolary Database (RSTempDB). It has a lot of I/O of transaction.

1.RSDB stores the report's metadata, including snapshots. It is long living, thus it should be backed up.
2.RSTempDB stores tempolary snapshot while running reports. It is highly volatile. And since its volatile, we need the report lifetime policy of data by setting session timeout value (10 min): Clean up Cycle Minutes guides background clean up thread.

Then, how different between RS2005 and RS2008.
For RS2005,

-Many insert to Chunk Data

They showed us the new tool, MS SQL Server 2008 Report Builder. It looks like MS Office 2007 Application because of its theme. In the future, users can design and use the reports themselves. I asked them if there are any features that we still need Visual Studio 2008 to develop the report. They answered me that the Report Builder can do anything VS2008 can except debugging and creating and using several data sources.

The reason that the organization needs security policy consists of to protect the organization, protect business and employees, set the rules for expected behavior- the prohibited activities, be used for authorize activities, be used for approved operational steps, and legal compliance.

Policy is a part of security the global standard of security is ISO27001 (Global Standard Code of Protection for information security management). Now Thailand has 20 certificates of this ISO.

Policy can declare the direction of the organization and policy is an intelligent property of the organization.

For more security, Forbes, SM Team, told me the way to set the IP address and domain name restrictions. By setting it, we can specify who can access the WebSite or Web Service.

-Right click at you web sites

-Select Granted access or Denied access as the default, then you can specify for the exception case.

Let's Talk about .. MOSS-Error "You do not habe the rights to perform this operation" when setting SSO

A few week ago, I got the error "You do no have rights to perform this operation" message when I tried to manage the Single Sign-On setting on MOSS2007. I asked P'Knight DBA and P'Pop DBA to check if the rights of the user account I used is a member of public database in the configuration database and it's the member of serveradmin fixed server role in the instance of MS SQL Server or not, and it is. Thus, I opened a case to Microsoft. Microsoft Support Engineer suggested me to check the Single Sign-On service logon account in Windows Server 2003 service. And I found that why the error occured. My Single Sign-on Service logon account was set as Local System. It has to be set as the correct domain account that I use with MOSS.

With the help of Microsoft and the idea from SharePoint 2003 article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/889645 , it may concluded that we have to make sure that the user account we're gonna use to set the SSO must be..

Log On As in Microsoft Single Sign-On Service in Windows Server 2003
Member of Administrator/Local group of MOSS2007
Member of public database role on the config database

The instruction to install the SQL Server Reporting Services Add-in

-Make sure you already installed Service Pack 3 of SQL Server 2005

-First I downloaded the add-in from

NOTE: Check whether your MOSS runs on 32 or 64 bit server

-Install it

-RestartIIS

-Enter Central Administrator

-Go to Application Management tab

-Go to Reporting Services->Manage integration settings

Today I participated a mini course of Web Services Enhancements (WSE) 3.0, instructed by Dr. Gorn Tepvorachai and Mr.Suppakrit Forbes Chatchayanusorn from Standards & Methodology Team, IT Department, BOT.

Since I have to develop the web services that return some credential results, WSE 3.0 is the solution they suggested me.

The basic concept of WSE 3.0 is there is a connection between web site and web service that makes it unable to be called directly via URL.

The instruction to Declare Security and Policy by WSE 3.0

NOTE: Make sure that you already installed WSE3.0 (runtime) to your server both WebSite and Web Service and WSE3.0 (Visual Studio Developer) on your developing machine.

At WebService Side:

-Check Your Web Service comes from New Web Site->ASP.NET Web Service

-Install WSE 3.0

-Open Solution of VS2005

- Check out the project of Web Service

-Right click at the project of Web Service

-Click WSE Settings 3.0 (at the buttom)

-In General tab, check Enable the project for Web Services Enhancements

-Check Enable Microsoft Web Services Enhancements Soap Protocol Factory

-In Diasnostics tab, Check Enable Message Trace

-Click OK button

-Check your web.config, is it added section tag with microsoft.web.services3

-Deploy your Web Service

-Try to call your web service via web browser (optional)

The best practical way to backup and restore site collection is using the command line. We use stsadm command for both backup and restore. To backup the site collection into .dat file, we use stsadm.exe -o backup -url [your Site Collection url] -filename [Backup filename with location url] For example,

Note: we can backup site collection from one server to restore it at another site collection.

It's the suggestion from P'Chatree from Microsoft. Thus, you should delete site collection before restoring the site collection.

“Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to obtaining a connection from the pool. This may have occurred because all pooled connections were in use and max pool size was reached. “

P'Beer told me that this problem is normally the result of our forgotten coding. We usually use SQLHelper to connect to the database. Inside SQLHelper, there are many methods. We often use ExecuteReader and forget to close the connection. This method doesn't automatically close the connection, because it returns object as SqlDataReader which has to open the connection while it's reading. Thus we have to close by ourselves, otherwise, the connections will stuck inside the pool til max pool size. In fact, dot net provides a garbage collector to collect the unused connections, however, we may have to wait for an hour. Therefore, the best way to do is closing connection everytime we finish execute reading.

Today I connected my InfoPath form to the SQL database, but when I ran it, I got the error "Request for the permission of type 'System.Data.SqlClient.SqlClientPermission, System.Data, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089' failed." I read some articles in the internet, and I tried to solve this problem by setting the full trust, and it works.

In the desing mode, click menu Tools.
Click Form Options...
Select Category Security and Trust.
Check out the Automatically determine security level.
Check Full Trust.
Create the Certificate.
Select that Certificate.
Click OK.

My requirement is data validation for the summary value of 4 text boxes must not greater than 100, thus I think I should create one text box to be the summary of them, then set the data validation at this text box but I don't want it to be shown so I have to hide it.

Last Thursday, there was a product presentation in my office. It's K2
Blackpearl. I've never use the product of K2 before, but since my works are
involving with SharePoint, thus I was assigned to listen this presentation.
K2 Blackpearl comes with the concept "It's Simple" and "Workflow was just the
Beginning".

In the past, K2 2003 is known as the workflow engine, but the new version,
Blackpearl, is the Platform. By default, its port is 5555.

The new concept that is used in the Blackpearl is "Building Blocks". The
concept that comes to serve the end users. Blackpearl separates the users into
3 types:

Users of SharePoint or the business end users: it provides the simplest
method. The users can draw diagram if they has permission. If we compare it with the using of SharePoint Designer, it easier since it's just drag-and-drop
to make workflow.

Users of Visio: Users can use Visio to draw the diagram. The new object can be assigned the value to make Blackpearl know what that object is before
creating the workflow.

Users of Visual Studio or developers: Users can use Visual Studio 2005 to
develop the workflow. K2 can be kept in Visual SourceSafe.

Anyway, by creating workflow with Blackpearl, whatever method you use, you can get the source code of it to further develop by Visual Studio 2005.

Users are suggested to create the "Smart Object" Server with the concept of
the Building Block. By this concept, it's simply since all items that are
created can be reused. The Smart Object is the abstract class for representing
the business entity for entire Blackpearl. It consists of Properties and
Method.

K2 Blackpearl is easy to execute since it conceals into MOSS. The users do not
feel different when using Blackpearl.

In Blackpearl's workflow, it provides function Delegate. It makes us be able
to decentralize our work. For example, when the Executive approver receives
the task to approve a lot of documents, he can assign some works to other
people. And he is able to set the permission of that people, too.

We can set the number of slot of the approvers. For example, some documents
may need only 50% of approvers to approve.

Blackpearl provides the K2 Web Designer for users to create and modify
workflow on web, i.e., only web browser is the requirement. However, this
function works for only MOSS2007.

Creating workflow with Blackpearl extends the concept of workflows that are
created by SharePoint Designer that the workflow does not only set
specifically to only one library, but it can be shared to many library but
upon to the user who has been set the permission to use.

When the workflow starts, the task of approve will be kept in 2 place: K2 Work
Space and (MOSS) Task.

In this new version, K2 Rom is SourceCode.Workflow.Client

For the Service Object, the users have to programe themselves, however, K2
provides the SDK to develop it.

The advantage of the K2 Blackpearl Smart Object

You have to create once.

It can be used to generate report via Report Designer.

It's based on ADO.net.

It provides Microsoft InfoPath 2007 Integration to allow access Smart
Object without coding. For MOSS2007, it uses Business Data Catalog to access the Smart Object.

Yesterday, P'Aey told me after the day before yesterday I came back to test my workflow and found that the E-mail was not sent to the approver. This problem occured after there was the restoring the site from other server. She tested something and it works. What she did is just turn off the e-mail notification and turn it on later... O_o I'm still confused but it's ok

When I want the 3-level group by to view the list, I cannot customize in MOSS's modify view since there are only two-level group by. P'Aey told me the method to do is using the SharePoint Designer to custom it.

The introduction to create many-level group by view

Open the view page you want to customize in SharePoint Designer.
Right click, select Convert to XSLT Data View.

On menu tab, select Data View -> Sort and Group.

The Sort and Group window appears. You can Add the field you want and then, tick Show Group Header.

Anyway, I found that we can't hide the folder when converting to XSLT Data View.

Today I went to MSDN Seminar at Swissotel Le Concorde, Bangkok. The main topic is, as same as the Microsoft Innovation Days that I went, Software + Services. It sounds like it's the new trend of the software developing.

You may got the problem to read when your spreadsheet is too large. You will not be able to know that what the column is. The way to solve this problem is freezing the panes.

The instruction to freeze the panes

If you would like to freeze the selected panes,
Go to View->Freeze Panes-> Freeze Panes

If you wolld like to freeze the top row,
Go to View->Freeze Panes-> Freeze Top Row

If you would like to freeze the first column,
Go to View->Freeze Panes-> Freeze First Column

For the example, I selected Freeze Top Row. The result is here. The Top Row is freezed so I can see what each column is.

And it's summarized that the Reporting Services is a server-based solution for creating management, and delivery of traditional, paper-based report, and interactive, web-based reports.The Full Reporting Write Cycle Support contains 4 steps:-

Report Authoring: Report Developers create report by using Report Definition Report (RDL) design tools.
Report Management: Administrators use SQL Server Management Studio to organize report and data sources, schedule report execution and delivery, and track reporting history.
Report Delivery: Users view reports in Web-based format or in E-mail.
Report Security: It implements a flexible, role-based security model to protect reports and reporting resources.

Let's Talk about .. Word 2007-Insert File Object

My friend, Net, just told me how to insert the file as an object to the document. It's also possible to do the same method in other office applications.

Go to Insert->Object->Object...

You can Create the new one or insert your exist file.

For my case, I inserted my exist file named DropDownList Excel file.

Tick Display as Icon if you would like to show your file as the icon. You can also change your icon to be other image.

The file appears in the document.

I went to Microsoft Innovations Day on November 13, 2007 at InterContinental Hotel, Bangkok. The main topic was about Software + Services.

This is a little summazation from this seminar. In the seminar, they talked mostly about Software + Services and Office Business Applications (OBA)

Services Transformation consists of

Service Delivery (SaaS)
Service Composition (SOA)
Service Experience (Web2.0)
Other Services

If we are asked which one should we choose, the answer is all of them.
And that's the new trend of application.. SOFTWARE+SERVICES. What we get when software meets services are Consistent across multiple clients + On-premise & hosted + Extending tools & Platform to cloud + Expanded monetization opps

Building Applications consists of 2 main parts:-

b. Mash-ups
c. Office Business Applications
Building for service
a. Scale

Application Classes can be classified into three types:-

Let's Talk about .. MOSS2007-Create New Task

Task is one of the Component come with MOSS2007. It's used to assign the task for whom.
The Instruction to create the Task

Go to Site Actions->Create
Click Tasks
Type the Name of Task, Description, and E-Mail Notification
The Task appears.
You can set the list upon your requirement. For example, change some properties of column, etc. Go to Setting->List Setting
If you want to modify the view, you can go to View:, then select Modify this View. However, if you would like to create new view, you can create if by select Create View.
For this example, I selected the Calendar view because I want to create the Schedule Time Table Task.
The view is changed.

In the summit, Microsoft also displayed the new product that will be launched in 2008. Microsoft Office PerformancePoint Server 2007.

It uses the concept of MAP or Monitor+Analyze+Plan.
1. Monitor (What?): by Scorecard, Dashboard, and Report
2. Analyze (Why?): by Analytic & Ad-Hoc query
3. Plan (How?): by Planning, Budgeting, and Forecasting
Anyway, it's not important how the order is, but it's important at the process.

And who care these information ?
1. Business Executives who want to drive the Performance with fast, flexible to change and able to audit.
2. Information Workers who want to contribute to Performance with the user-friendly, collabolative, and be able to define, modify, and maintain.
3. IT Managers who want to reduce the complexibility.

PerformacePoint Server 2007 will be officially shown in March 2007. Finally, Microsoft said that the list of current-and-future applications that can help each business organization (the requirement is upon the size of the organization) consists of ..

Today, I went to Microsoft Solutions Summit 2007 at Bangkok. The theme is Solutions Ready, People Ready. Most of the topics are involving with BI or Business Intelligence.
What I got from this summit is the definition of BI. BI is one of the MIS field (in the topic of DSS). BI is fundamentaly about providing business people with information and tools they need to make both operational and strategic business decision.

What the user need consists of Right information, Right time, and Right format. And who they are?
There are five types of users.
1. CEOs, who need the scorecard.
2. Managers, who need the dashboard.
3. Information Worker, who need the report.
4. Staffs, who need application integration.
5. Planners, who need analytic application.

Then, what these items are ...
1. Business Scorecard is meter or any kind of graphic report that mostly show the status of each process in color, e.g., Green as Finish/Ready, Yellow as Nearly to finish, and Red as Not Finish/Not reach the target. It shows the result by the KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) which is the current result compared with the past result or the target result.
2. Dashboard is any graphs that show the result which are linked to the detailed information.
3. Report is the normal report that is used by the normal information workers.
4. Application Integration is the output that are used by normal staffs. For example, the result of the Basket analysis that suggest which product should be related the promotion with this product. e.g., selling sci-fi movie with another sci-fi movie, etc.
5. Analytic Application, such as OLAP, which is useful for the planners.

When you want to install the SharePoint Server to your server machine, you should follow these steps:

Windows Server 2003
Install DNS
Install IIS
SQL Server 2005 ( include dotNet Framework 2.0)
dotNet Framework 3.0
MOSS 2007

The reason that we should do like this is the requirement of MOSS 2007 that needs dotNet Framework 3.0.

After you finish installation of MOSS 2007, you can install SharePoint Designer if you want.

Let's Talk about .. MOSS2007-Create Audience

The senior colleague teached me today about how to create and manage the Audience in SharePoint.

If you are Administrator of the SharePoint Server, you will be able to enter SharePoint 3.0 Central Administration.

After entering the SharePoint Central Adminitrator, go to your ShareServices. The default name is ShareServices 1.

Go to Audience

Click at Create audience.

The Create Audience page appears. Then, you have to type the name of Audience, the Description, and Owner of this Audience, and select that you want to satify the all rules or some rules. After that, click OK.

The Add Audience Rule page appears. In this page, you have to select that you want the operand to be the User or Property. Next, select the Operator, and Finally, type the Value. For example, if I want everyone in group of AllStar to be my Audience, I will select User as my Operand, Member of as my Operator, and AllStar as my Value. After that, click OK.
The View Audience Properties page appears. Don't forget to click Compile audience if you didn't set the schedule compilation. Note: you can enable the Schedule Compilation at Manage Audiences.

Let's Talk about .. Visual Studio 2005-Error Access Denied when calling Web Services

If you got the error message "Access Denied" when you called the Web Services, I suggest this method.

First, in Reference.cs, add the following command into the class of the Web Services that is referenced.

However, the senior colleague at my office told me that this method mostly works with VB.Net but not C#. So he recommended me to try the second method by set it as the Network Credential by assigning the username and password. (So, this one will okay when you have the username and password for the server that you call the web services)

Yesterday I tried to delete the SharePoint item in the loop by using item.delete()
Then, I got this error message,

"Updates are currently disallowed on GET requests. To allow updates on a GET, set the 'AllowUnsafeUpdates' property on SPWeb."

So, I searched at Google and found many people've ever got this problem. I used the solution of Robin's Sharepoint Blog. And it's worked.

However, I got the second one,

"Collection was modified; enumeration operation may not execute."

Then, I searched again. I know from the MBR IT Soluctions web that because I used the foreach loop that is incremented by the SharePoint items which was deleted.

I think you may feel upset when your Web Part got error message like "Unexpected error". I found some info about how to enable debugging. However I never tried it yet. When you got e-mail which was not written in English, you may got some problems since the message was shown in other language. Yeah, you'd select the suitable encoding for your message. This is the way to enable the Approval Status for the Document Library.
1. Enter Site Setting.
2. Go to Site Administration>Site libraries and lists.
3. Click at Customize "Your document library/list".
4. Go to General Setting>Versioning settings.

5. Set Content Approval as "Yes".
6. Set Document Version History as "No versioning".
7. Set Draft Item Security as "items (and the author of the item) ".
8. Set Require Check Out as "No".
9. Click OK Button
10. The Approval Status appears.

11. Now there is Approve/reject inside the menu when you click at the down-arrow at the right of each item.

If you're creating the Custom Web Part and using C#.NET, you should know SPListItem.

Today I was ordered to change the color of the Web Part's border line. I took about 2 hours to find which style is involving with the border >_< Finally, I found that the Styles in core.css that have the relation with the Border line of Web Part consist of .ms-partline, .ms-WPBorder, and .ms-WPBorderBorderOnly.

.ms-partline is the properties of the line between the content of Web Part and the link to add something to that Web Part.

.ms-WPBorder and .ms-WPBorderBorderOnly are the properties of the lines of Web Part.
